Paired connectors: entweder ... oder and weder ... noch

In brief

Use entweder … oder to present two alternatives: either one or the other. Use weder … noch to reject both: neither one nor the other. The two parts can link words, phrases, or complete main clauses.

Form

entweder + first option + oder + second option; weder + first option + noch + second option

Usage

• Keep the alternatives parallel where possible: two days, two objects, or two complete clauses.
• With complete main clauses, each clause has its own conjugated verb. If entweder begins the first clause, its verb comes next: Entweder gehen wir … oder wir bleiben … .
• Weder … noch already makes both alternatives negative; do not add nicht or kein to negate them again.

Examples

• Sie möchte entweder am Freitag oder am Samstag kommen. — She wants to come either on Friday or on Saturday.
• Entweder rufst du mich an oder du schreibst mir eine Nachricht. — Either you call me or you send me a message.
• Ich trinke weder Kaffee noch Tee. — I drink neither coffee nor tea.
• Wir haben weder einen Drucker noch einen Scanner. — We have neither a printer nor a scanner.

Common mistake

❌ Ich habe weder Zeit noch kein Geld.

✅ Ich habe weder Zeit noch Geld.

In German, weder … noch already negates both items. Adding kein before Geld creates an unintended double negative.

Entweder … oder offers a choice; weder … noch rules out both choices.
