Negating nouns with kein
In brief
Use kein before a noun to say ‘no’ or ‘not a/any’. It replaces ein or stands before a noun without an article: Das ist ein Auto → Das ist kein Auto. Unlike English ‘no’, its ending changes with the noun.
Form
kein + noun; nominative: kein (masculine/neuter), keine (feminine/plural); accusative: keinen (masculine), kein (neuter), keine (feminine/plural).
Usage
- Use kein to say that you do not have a person or thing: Ich habe keinen Hund.
- Use keine with plural nouns when you mean ‘no’ or ‘not any’: Wir haben keine Äpfel.
- Choose the ending by the noun’s gender, number and role in the sentence.
Examples
- Das ist kein Auto. — That is not a car.
- Ich habe keinen Hund. — I don’t have a dog.
- Wir haben keine Zeit. — We don’t have time.
- Hier gibt es keine Äpfel. — There are no apples here.
Common mistake
❌ Ich habe kein Hund.
✅ Ich habe keinen Hund.
Hund is masculine and the object of habe, so kein takes the accusative ending -en.
Remember
With plural nouns, use keine; there is no plural form of ein.
