Noun plurals

A1EssentialGerman

In brief

German nouns have several plural forms. Unlike English, you cannot usually make every plural by adding -s. Learn the plural together with each new noun: das Buch → die Bücher, die Frau → die Frauen. Some plurals also change a vowel (an umlaut), as in der Apfel → die Äpfel.

Form

Common patterns: -e (der Freund → die Freunde), -er (das Kind → die Kinder), -n/-en (die Frau → die Frauen), -s (das Auto → die Autos), or no ending (der Lehrer → die Lehrer). An umlaut may appear too: das Buch → die Bücher.

Usage

  • Use the plural when talking about two or more of something: ein Buch → zwei Bücher.
  • Check the plural form when learning a noun; there is no single ending that works for all nouns.

Examples

  • Ich habe zwei Bücher. — I have two books.
  • Meine Freunde kommen heute. — My friends are coming today.
  • Die Frauen warten draußen. — The women are waiting outside.
  • Hier stehen drei Autos. — There are three cars here.

Common mistake

❌ Ich habe zwei Buchs.

✅ Ich habe zwei Bücher.

Do not add English-style -s to every German noun. The plural of Buch is Bücher.

Remember

Learn each noun with its plural form, for example: das Buch, die Bücher.
