Sentence Structure

Where to place nicht

A2EssentialGerman

In brief

Use nicht to negate an action or a specific part of a sentence. Its position depends on what you mean to deny. To negate the whole action, nicht often comes late in the sentence; it does not automatically sit next to the conjugated verb as English not does.

Form

Whole action: conjugated verb + other details + nicht (+ infinitive or past participle). Specific detail: nicht + the detail being negated.

Usage

  • With a single verb, nicht often follows time or other details: Ich komme heute nicht.
  • With an infinitive or past participle at the end, put nicht before that final verb: Ich kann heute nicht kommen.
  • Put nicht directly before a detail you want to contrast: Ich komme nicht heute, sondern morgen.

Examples

  • Ich komme heute nicht. — I’m not coming today.
  • Wir können heute nicht schwimmen. — We can’t swim today.
  • Sie hat den Film nicht gesehen. — She hasn’t seen the film.
  • Ich komme nicht heute, sondern morgen. — I’m coming tomorrow, not today.

Common mistake

❌ Ich nicht komme heute.

✅ Ich komme heute nicht.

Unlike English not, nicht does not go before the conjugated verb here. Put it after heute to negate the action.

Remember

Put nicht just before the detail you want to deny; for the whole action, look toward the end of the sentence.
