Quantity words with nouns

A2ImportantGerman

In brief

German quantity words tell you how much or how many. Use viele (many) or wenige (few) with plural count nouns, but viel (much/a lot of) or wenig (little) with things you do not normally count, such as water or time. Ein paar means a few and goes with a plural noun.

Form

viele/wenige/ein paar + plural noun; viel/wenig + uncountable noun. Quantity words such as viele can change their ending with the case: mit vielen Freunden.

Usage

  • Use viele or wenige when talking about the number of people or objects.
  • Use viel or wenig for an amount, such as viel Wasser or wenig Zeit.
  • Use ein paar for a small number: ein paar Äpfel. Here, paar stays lowercase.

Examples

  • Ich habe viele Bücher. — I have many books.
  • Wir brauchen ein paar Äpfel. — We need a few apples.
  • Sie trinkt wenig Kaffee. — She drinks little coffee.
  • Mit vielen Freunden macht es mehr Spaß. — It’s more fun with many friends.

Common mistake

❌ Ich habe viel Bücher.

✅ Ich habe viele Bücher.

Use viele with plural count nouns such as Bücher; use viel with uncountable nouns such as Wasser.

Remember

Countable plural: viele Bücher. Uncountable amount: viel Wasser.
