Pronouns and Determiners

Reciprocal pronouns: einander and gegenseitig

B2Further studyGerman

In brief

Use einander when two or more people do something to each other: Sie helfen einander means that each helps the other. Gegenseitig emphasizes that the action goes both ways; it usually accompanies a pronoun such as sich or uns rather than replacing it.

Form

Plural subject + verb + einander; or plural subject + verb + reflexive pronoun + gegenseitig. With a preposition, attach it to einander: miteinander, voneinander, füreinander.

Usage

  • Use einander as the reciprocal object of a verb: Die Nachbarn kennen einander.
  • Use sich gegenseitig or uns gegenseitig when you want to make mutual action explicit.
  • Use compounds such as miteinander and voneinander when the verb calls for a preposition.

Examples

  • Die Nachbarn helfen einander beim Umzug. — The neighbors help each other move.
  • Wir unterstützen uns gegenseitig bei der Arbeit. — We support each other at work.
  • Die beiden sprechen oft miteinander. — The two of them often talk to each other.
  • Die Kollegen lernen voneinander. — The colleagues learn from one another.

Common mistake

❌ Sie helfen gegenseitig.

✅ Sie helfen sich gegenseitig.

Gegenseitig expresses mutuality but does not supply the object required by helfen here; add sich, or say Sie helfen einander.

Remember

Einander can stand on its own as an object; gegenseitig usually needs a matching pronoun. After a preposition, use a single word such as miteinander.
