Prepositions

Time prepositions: am, um, im, seit and vor

A2ImportantGerman

In brief

German uses different prepositions to say when something happens or how long it has been happening. Use am for days, um for clock times, and im for months or seasons. Use seit for a situation that began in the past and is still true; use vor to say how long ago something happened.

Form

am + day/date; um + clock time; im + month/season; seit + duration or starting point; vor + duration. Seit and vor take the dative case: seit einem Jahr, vor zwei Tagen.

Usage

  • Use am with weekdays and dates: am Montag, am 3. Mai.
  • Use um with an exact time: um acht Uhr.
  • Use im with months and seasons: im April, im Sommer.
  • Use seit with the present tense for something continuing now: seit zwei Jahren.
  • Use vor to locate a past event: vor einer Woche.

Examples

  • Am Montag treffen wir uns um acht Uhr. — We’re meeting on Monday at eight o’clock.
  • Im August habe ich Urlaub. — I’m on vacation in August.
  • Ich wohne seit zwei Jahren hier. — I’ve lived here for two years.
  • Vor einer Woche war ich krank. — I was sick a week ago.

Common mistake

❌ Ich wohne für zwei Jahre hier.

✅ Ich wohne seit zwei Jahren hier.

For an ongoing situation, English ‘for two years’ becomes German ‘seit zwei Jahren’. Use the present tense and the dative plural after seit.

Remember

English ‘for’ can become seit when the situation continues into the present; English ‘ago’ is vor.
