Present Perfect

A2ImportantLatin American Spanish

Kurz erklärt

The Spanish present perfect (pretérito perfecto compuesto) describes a past action that is connected to the present. It is formed with the present tense of haber and a past participle. In much of Latin America, speakers often prefer the preterite for completed events, especially with finished time expressions such as ayer. The present perfect remains useful for experiences, recent actions with a present result, and actions within a time period that is still continuing.

Bildung

Present tense of haber (he, has, ha, hemos, han) + past participle: -ar → -ado; -er/-ir → -ido. Common irregular participles include hecho and visto.

Verwendung

  • Life experiences without stating a finished past time
  • Recent actions whose result matters now
  • Actions during a time period that is still continuing

  • ¿Has visto mis llaves? — Have you seen my keys?

Merke

Use a form of haber before the participle. The participle does not change to match the subject.
