Expressing opposition and concession
Kurz erklärt
French distinguishes opposition from concession. Opposition places contrasting facts side by side, often with alors que or tandis que. Concession acknowledges a fact that might suggest one result, but the actual result is different. Bien que and quoique introduce this acknowledged fact and require the subjunctive; même si takes the indicative.
Bildung
Opposition: alors que / tandis que + indicative. Concession: bien que / quoique + subjunctive; même si + indicative; malgré + noun or stressed pronoun; avoir beau + infinitive.
Verwendung
- Use alors que or tandis que to contrast two situations.
- Use bien que or quoique for a formal or neutral concession.
- Use même si for a real or hypothetical condition that does not change the outcome.
- Use malgré before a noun, not before a conjugated clause.
- Use avoir beau + infinitive when an effort or circumstance has no effect.
Beispiele
- Alors que Léa adore cuisiner, son frère préfère commander. — While Léa loves cooking, her brother prefers ordering food.
- Bien qu’il soit tard, nous allons finir ce projet. — Although it is late, we are going to finish this project.
- Même s’il pleut demain, je viendrai. — Even if it rains tomorrow, I will come.
- Elle a beau s’excuser, il reste contrarié. — No matter how much she apologizes, he remains upset.
Typischer Fehler
❌ Bien qu’il est fatigué, il continue.
✅ Bien qu’il soit fatigué, il continue.
Unlike English ‘although,’ bien que requires the subjunctive, so être becomes soit here.
Merke
Bien que takes the subjunctive, but même si takes the indicative. Use malgré only before a noun or stressed pronoun.
