Sentence Structure

C'è and Ci Sono

A1EssentialItalian

In brief

Use c’è to say that one person or thing exists or is present somewhere: C’è un bar qui (There’s a café here). Use ci sono for two or more: Ci sono due bar qui (There are two cafés here). These expressions often match English ‘there is’ and ‘there are.’

Form

c’è + singular noun; ci sono + plural noun. For negatives, put non before the expression: non c’è / non ci sono.

Usage

  • Use c’è with a singular noun, including un or una: C’è una farmacia qui vicino.
  • Use ci sono with a plural noun and quantities: Ci sono tre sedie.
  • In questions, the same forms work with a questioning tone: C’è un bagno? Ci sono posti liberi?

Examples

  • C’è un supermercato qui vicino? — Is there a supermarket nearby?
  • Ci sono due sedie in cucina. — There are two chairs in the kitchen.
  • Non c’è acqua in frigo. — There isn’t any water in the fridge.
  • Ci sono posti liberi? — Are there any available seats?

Common mistake

❌ C’è due sedie in cucina.

✅ Ci sono due sedie in cucina.

With a plural noun like due sedie, use ci sono, not the singular c’è.

Remember

One: c’è. More than one: ci sono.
