Adjectives and Adverbs

Comparatives and Equality

A2ImportantItalian

In brief

To compare people or things in Italian, put più (more) or meno (less) before the adjective. Use di before the person or thing you compare it with. To say two things are equally something, use (così) … come or (tanto) … quanto.

Form

più/meno + adjective + di + noun or pronoun; (così) + adjective + come; (tanto) + adjective + quanto. Di combines with articles: di + il = del, di + la = della.

Usage

  • Use più … di and meno … di to compare two people or things; di becomes del, della, and so on before an article.
  • Use più … che when comparing two qualities of the same thing, such as beautiful versus practical.
  • Use (così) … come or (tanto) … quanto for equal degrees; così and tanto can be left out.

Examples

  • Questo treno è più veloce di quello. — This train is faster than that one.
  • La mia stanza è meno grande della tua. — My room is smaller than yours.
  • Questa borsa è più bella che pratica. — This bag is prettier than it is practical.
  • Giulia è alta quanto sua sorella. — Giulia is as tall as her sister.

Common mistake

❌ Luca è più alto che Marco.

✅ Luca è più alto di Marco.

When comparing two people by height, use di before the second person. Use che when comparing two qualities of the same person or thing.

Remember

For two people or things, think più … di; for two qualities of one thing, think più … che.
