Hypothetical If-Clauses about the Present
In brief
To imagine a situation that is not true now, Italian uses se with the imperfect subjunctive in the if-clause and the present conditional for the imagined result. The situation may be unlikely or simply contrary to current reality.
Form
Se + congiuntivo imperfetto, + condizionale presente: Se avessi tempo, uscirei. The result can come first: Uscirei se avessi tempo.
Usage
- Use this pattern to describe what you would do if your circumstances were different now.
- Use it to imagine another person’s current situation or ability; the order of the two clauses can change.
Examples
- Se avessi più tempo, leggerei ogni sera. — If I had more time, I would read every evening.
- Compreremmo una casa più grande se guadagnassimo di più. — We would buy a bigger house if we earned more.
- Se fossi qui, potresti aiutarmi con la cena. — If you were here, you could help me with dinner.
Common mistake
❌ Se avrei più tempo, leggerei ogni sera.
✅ Se avessi più tempo, leggerei ogni sera.
Use the imperfect subjunctive after se for a hypothetical present condition; the conditional belongs in the result clause.
Remember
In this pattern, se takes the imperfect subjunctive, not the conditional.
