Brazilian Portuguese in Everyday Use

Ficar for location, change and temporary states

A2ImportantBrazilian Portuguese

In brief

In Brazilian Portuguese, ficar can tell you where a place is, mean ‘stay’, or describe a change in how someone feels. Its meaning depends on what follows it.

Form

ficar + place (location or staying); ficar + adjective (becoming or feeling a certain way). Present: fico, fica; past: fiquei, ficou.

Usage

  • Use ficar to ask or say where a shop, building, or other fixed place is located.
  • Use ficar em + place when someone stays somewhere for a while.
  • Use ficar + adjective for a change in feeling or condition; in the present, it can describe a recurring reaction.

Examples

  • Onde fica a farmácia? — Where is the pharmacy?
  • Vou ficar em casa hoje. — I’m going to stay home today.
  • Ela ficou feliz com a notícia. — The news made her happy.
  • Fico nervoso antes das provas. — I get nervous before exams.

Common mistake

❌ Onde fica você agora?

✅ Onde você está agora?

Use ficar for the location of a fixed place, but estar to ask where a person is right now.

Remember

For a place, ficar often answers ‘Where is it?’ For a person, it often answers ‘Where will they stay?’ or ‘How did they become?’
