Expressing purpose with para and para que

B1ImportantBrazilian Portuguese

In brief

To say what an action is for, use para followed by an infinitive when the same person does both actions. Use para que followed by a verb in the present subjunctive when someone else needs to do the second action.

Form

Action + para + infinitive; action + para que + subject + present subjunctive.

Usage

  • Use para + infinitive for your own goal: Saí cedo para pegar o ônibus.
  • Use para que + subjunctive to express a goal involving another person: Fale devagar para que eu entenda.
  • For a past goal, para que normally takes the imperfect subjunctive: Falei devagar para que ela entendesse.

Examples

  • Estudo todos os dias para melhorar meu português. — I study every day to improve my Portuguese.
  • Vou ao mercado para comprar pão. — I’m going to the store to buy bread.
  • Mandei o endereço para que você encontre a casa. — I sent the address so that you can find the house.
  • Feche a janela para que o bebê consiga dormir. — Close the window so that the baby can sleep.

Common mistake

❌ Fale devagar para que eu entendo.

✅ Fale devagar para que eu entenda.

After para que, use the subjunctive (entenda), not the indicative (entendo), to express the intended result.

Remember

Same person doing both actions? Usually choose para + infinitive. A goal expressed with para que calls for the subjunctive.
