Pronouns and Determiners

Pronouns after prepositions

A2ImportantBrazilian Portuguese

In brief

After a preposition such as para (for), de (of/from), or com (with), Brazilian Portuguese uses pronouns that can stand on their own. For ‘me,’ use mim after most prepositions: para mim, de mim. With com, the form is comigo (‘with me’).

Form

preposition + mim, você, ele/ela, nós, vocês; but com + mim → comigo. With você, say com você.

Usage

  • Use para mim when something is intended for you: Esse café é para mim (‘That coffee is for me’).
  • Use comigo for ‘with me,’ but com você for ‘with you’ in everyday Brazilian Portuguese.
  • After other prepositions, você, ele, ela, nós, and vocês keep their usual forms: de você, para ela, entre nós.

Examples

  • Esse presente é para mim. — This gift is for me.
  • Ela falou comigo ontem. — She spoke with me yesterday.
  • Vou ao cinema com você. — I’m going to the movies with you.
  • Ele sentou perto de mim. — He sat near me.

Common mistake

❌ Ela falou com mim.

✅ Ela falou comigo.

English uses ‘with me,’ but Brazilian Portuguese combines com and mim into comigo.

Remember

For ‘with me,’ remember comigo; for ‘for me,’ use para mim.
