Sentence Structure

Fronting and emphasis in everyday sentences

B2Further studyBrazilian Portuguese

In brief

In Brazilian Portuguese, you can put something at the beginning of a sentence to make it the topic: the thing you are talking about. For stronger emphasis on who, when, or where, use é/foi … que. These choices change what stands out, not the basic event.

Form

Topic first + comment: Esse filme eu já vi. Stronger focus: É/Foi + focused person, time, or place + que + rest of sentence: Foi a Ana que trouxe o bolo.

Usage

  • Move an object to the front when it is already part of the conversation: Esse filme eu já vi. This is common in speech, often with a brief pause.
  • Use é … que to highlight a present or upcoming detail; use foi … que for a past event: É amanhã que a gente viaja; Foi a Ana que ligou.
  • Choose the focus to correct or clarify a detail: Foi na terça que eu mandei a mensagem, não na segunda.

Examples

  • Esse restaurante eu já conheço. — I already know that restaurant.
  • Foi a Ana que trouxe o bolo. — It was Ana who brought the cake.
  • É amanhã que a gente vai se encontrar. — It’s tomorrow that we’re going to meet.
  • Foi no mercado que eu encontrei o Pedro, não na escola. — It was at the market that I ran into Pedro, not at school.

Common mistake

❌ Foi ontem quando a gente se encontrou.

✅ Foi ontem que a gente se encontrou.

In this focus pattern, use que after the emphasized time. English can say ‘It was yesterday when we met,’ but Portuguese uses foi ontem que here.

Remember

Put a familiar topic first; use é/foi … que when you want a detail to stand out.
