Comparatives, superlatives and comparisons
In brief
To compare two things in German, add -er to an adjective and use als for ‘than’: schneller als. To say two things are equally alike, use so … wie (‘as … as’). For ‘the most’ or ‘the -est’ after a verb, use am plus the adjective ending in -sten: am schnellsten.
Form
schnell → schneller als → am schnellsten; warm → wärmer als → am wärmsten; gut → besser als → am besten.
Usage
- Use als after a comparative when one thing exceeds another; use wie after so + adjective for equality.
- Some common adjectives change their vowel: alt → älter → am ältesten, groß → größer → am größten.
- Learn common irregular forms: gut → besser → am besten; gern → lieber → am liebsten.
Examples
- Der Zug ist schneller als der Bus. — The train is faster than the bus.
- Heute ist es so warm wie gestern. — Today it is as warm as yesterday.
- Hier ist es am ruhigsten. — It is quietest here.
- Ich trinke lieber Tee als Kaffee. — I prefer tea to coffee.
Common mistake
❌ Er ist mehr groß als ich.
✅ Er ist größer als ich.
English can form comparisons with ‘more’, but German normally adds -er to the adjective; groß also changes its vowel to ö.
Remember
Use als for ‘than’ and wie for ‘as’ in comparisons.
