Konjunktiv II for wishes, requests and unreal situations
In brief
Use Konjunktiv II to talk about what you wish were true, imagine a different situation now, or make a polite request. It often corresponds to English ‘would’, ‘could’ or ‘if I had’. The verb form shows that the situation is imagined rather than stated as fact.
Form
For many verbs, use würde + infinitive; common verbs also have short forms such as hätte (haben), wäre (sein) and könnte (können). In an if-clause with wenn, the conjugated verb goes at the end: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen.
Usage
- Express a wish about the present: Ich wünschte, ich hätte mehr Zeit.
- Ask politely with a form such as könnten or hätte gern.
- Describe an imagined present situation using wenn and a result with würde.
Examples
- Ich wünschte, ich hätte mehr Zeit. — I wish I had more time.
- Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen? — Could you please help me?
- Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich öfter lesen. — If I had more time, I would read more often.
- Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. — I’d like a coffee.
Common mistake
❌ Wenn ich hätte mehr Zeit, würde ich öfter lesen.
✅ Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich öfter lesen.
English keeps ‘had’ near the start of an if-clause; in a German wenn-clause, the conjugated verb goes at the end.
Remember
Use hätte, wäre and könnte often; use würde + infinitive for many other verbs.
