Konjunktiv II for unreal past situations
In brief
Use the past Konjunktiv II to imagine a different outcome for something that is already over. It corresponds to English ‘would have’ and, in a past condition, ‘if … had’. The form makes clear that you are discussing an alternative to what happened, rather than a possibility that is still open.
Form
hätte or wäre + past participle: Ich hätte angerufen. / Ich wäre gekommen. In a wenn-clause, put hätte or wäre at the end: wenn ich angerufen hätte.
Usage
- Describe an unreal past condition and its imagined result: Wenn ich Zeit gehabt hätte, wäre ich gekommen.
- Describe a past outcome that depended on something else: Ohne deine Hilfe hätten wir es nicht geschafft.
- Choose wäre for verbs that use sein in the Perfekt, such as kommen; otherwise use hätte.
Examples
- Wenn ich früher losgefahren wäre, hätte ich den Zug erwischt. — If I had left earlier, I would have caught the train.
- Sie hätte angerufen, wenn sie deine Nummer gehabt hätte. — She would have called if she had had your number.
- Ohne deine Hilfe hätten wir es nicht geschafft. — Without your help, we wouldn’t have managed it.
Common mistake
❌ Wenn ich früher gekommen hätte, hätte ich dich gesehen.
✅ Wenn ich früher gekommen wäre, hätte ich dich gesehen.
Kommen forms its Perfekt with sein, so its past Konjunktiv II uses wäre, not hätte.
Remember
For past alternatives, use hätte or wäre plus the past participle; a wenn-clause places the auxiliary last.
