The verbs sein, haben and werden
In brief
Sein means ‘to be’, haben means ‘to have’, and werden means ‘to become’. These three common verbs have special present-tense forms. Choose the form that matches the person you are talking about. Use werden here when someone or something changes, as in ‘I’m becoming tired’.
Form
Present tense (ich / du / er, sie, es / wir / ihr / sie, Sie): sein → bin / bist / ist / sind / seid / sind; haben → habe / hast / hat / haben / habt / haben; werden → werde / wirst / wird / werden / werdet / werden.
Usage
- Use sein for identity, location, or a state: Ich bin zu Hause.
- Use haben for possession: Sie hat ein Fahrrad.
- Use werden for a change of state: Es wird kalt.
Examples
- Ich bin heute zu Hause. — I’m at home today.
- Du hast einen Hund. — You have a dog.
- Es wird dunkel. — It’s getting dark.
- Wir sind müde. — We’re tired.
Common mistake
❌ Du sein müde.
✅ Du bist müde.
Use bist, not the infinitive sein, with du: Du bist müde means ‘You’re tired’.
Remember
The du forms bist, hast, and wirst are worth learning by heart.
