Verbs and Tenses

Stem-changing verbs in the present tense

A1ImportantGerman

In brief

Some common German verbs change their stem vowel in the present tense when the subject is du or er, sie, or es. For example, fahren becomes du fährst and er fährt; lesen becomes du liest and sie liest. Other forms keep the original vowel: ich fahre, wir fahren.

Form

For certain verbs, change the stem vowel with du and er/sie/es: a → ä (fahren → du fährst), e → ie (lesen → du liest), or e → i (sprechen → er spricht). Then use the usual present-tense ending.

Usage

  • Learn the vowel change with each verb; not every verb changes its stem.
  • Use the changed vowel only with du and er/sie/es, not with ich, wir, ihr, or sie/Sie.

Examples

  • Ich fahre heute mit dem Bus. — I’m taking the bus today.
  • Du fährst heute mit dem Bus. — You’re taking the bus today.
  • Er liest jeden Abend ein Buch. — He reads a book every evening.
  • Sie spricht Deutsch. — She speaks German.

Common mistake

❌ Du fahrst mit dem Bus.

✅ Du fährst mit dem Bus.

With du, fahren changes a to ä.

Remember

The vowel change belongs to the individual verb, so learn it together with the infinitive.
