Verbs and Tenses

State passive with sein

B2Further studyGerman

In brief

The German Zustandspassiv describes the state something is in after an action has been completed. In Die Tür ist abgeschlossen, the door is locked now; the sentence does not say who locked it or describe the act of locking it.

Form

Conjugated sein + Partizip II: Die Tür ist abgeschlossen; die Türen waren abgeschlossen. The participle does not change with the subject.

Usage

  • Use it to describe a current or past result: Das Fenster ist geöffnet; das Fenster war geöffnet.
  • Add a time expression if needed: Seit gestern ist der Eingang gesperrt.
  • Focus on the condition of the person or thing, rather than the event that caused it.

Examples

  • Die Tür ist abgeschlossen. — The door is locked.
  • Alle Plätze sind bereits reserviert. — All the seats are already reserved.
  • Gestern war das Museum geschlossen. — The museum was closed yesterday.

Common mistake

❌ Die Tür ist abschließen.

✅ Die Tür ist abgeschlossen.

After sein, use the past participle abgeschlossen, not the infinitive abschließen, to describe the door’s locked state.

Remember

For a resulting state, use sein + Partizip II.
