Time Expressions with hacer, desde, and desde hace

A2ImportantLatin American Spanish

Kurz erklärt

Spanish uses hace with a length of time to say how long ago a completed event happened. Use desde with a specific starting point, and desde hace with a length of time when a situation began in the past and still continues. Another common pattern for an ongoing situation is hace + time period + que + present tense.

Bildung

Past event: hace + time period. Ongoing situation: present tense + desde + starting point; present tense + desde hace + time period; or hace + time period + que + present tense.

Verwendung

  • Use hace to locate a completed event in the past: hace dos días means two days ago.
  • Use desde before a starting point such as a date, day, or time.
  • Use desde hace before a duration that continues up to the present.
  • Use the present tense, not the past tense, for an action or situation that is still continuing.

Beispiele

  • Llegué a Lima hace dos meses. — I arrived in Lima two months ago.
  • Trabajo aquí desde enero. — I have worked here since January.
  • Vivimos en este barrio desde hace cinco años. — We have lived in this neighborhood for five years.
  • Hace una semana que no veo a Carla. — I haven’t seen Carla for a week.

Typischer Fehler

❌ Vivo aquí desde dos años.

✅ Vivo aquí desde hace dos años.

Use desde hace, not desde alone, before a duration. Desde alone introduces a starting point, such as desde 2024.

Merke

Use desde for a starting point and desde hace for a duration. Use hace alone when you mean ago.
