Spanish-Specific Structures

ser vs. estar

A1EssentialLatin American Spanish

Kurz erklärt

Spanish has two verbs for English “to be.” Use ser to identify or describe what someone or something is, including origin, profession, and lasting characteristics. Use estar for a current state or condition and for the location of people and things. The choice can change the meaning: es aburrido means “he is boring,” while está aburrido means “he is bored.”

Bildung

Present tense: ser: soy, eres, es, somos, son; estar: estoy, estás, está, estamos, están.

Verwendung

  • Use ser for identity, origin, profession, and general characteristics.
  • Use ser for the time and date.
  • Use estar for feelings, health, and temporary conditions.
  • Use estar to say where a person or thing is located.

Beispiele

  • Soy estudiante y soy de Colombia. — I am a student, and I am from Colombia.
  • Mi hermana está cansada hoy. — My sister is tired today.
  • Las llaves están en la mesa. — The keys are on the table.
  • Hoy es lunes. — Today is Monday.

Typischer Fehler

❌ Soy cansado.

✅ Estoy cansado.

Tiredness is a current condition, so use estar rather than ser.

Merke

Use ser for what something is and estar for how or where it is. Learn the present-tense forms because both verbs are irregular.
