Past Perfect

B1ImportantLatin American Spanish

Kurz erklärt

The Spanish past perfect, or pretérito pluscuamperfecto, describes an action that was already complete before another moment or event in the past. It helps make the order of past events clear.

Bildung

Imperfect of haber (había, habías, había, habíamos, habían) + past participle: había hablado, habíamos comido, habían salido. The participle does not change for gender or number.

Verwendung

  • To describe an action completed before another past action.
  • To say what had or had not happened by a particular past time.
  • Often with ya, todavía no, nunca, or antes.

Beispiele

  • Cuando llegué, Ana ya había preparado la cena. — When I arrived, Ana had already prepared dinner.
  • Nunca habíamos visto tanta nieve antes de ese viaje. — We had never seen so much snow before that trip.
  • A las ocho, ustedes todavía no habían llamado. — By eight o’clock, you still had not called.

Typischer Fehler

❌ Había escribido el correo antes de la reunión.

✅ Había escrito el correo antes de la reunión.

Use the irregular past participle escrito, not escribido.

Merke

Think of había + participle as looking back from a point that is already in the past.
