Clauses & Connections

Expressing cause and consequence

B1ImportantFrench

Kurz erklärt

French uses different connectors to explain why something happens or to introduce its result. Parce que gives a straightforward reason. Puisque presents the reason as already known or obvious, while comme often places the reason at the beginning of the sentence. À cause de introduces a noun and usually highlights an unfavorable cause; grâce à introduces a helpful or positive one. For a consequence, donc, alors, and c’est pourquoi link the result to what came before. Si… que and tellement… que express that a degree or intensity produces a result.

Bildung

Cause: parce que / puisque / comme + clause; à cause de / grâce à + noun. Consequence: clause + donc / alors / c’est pourquoi + clause; si + adjective/adverb + que or tellement + adjective/adverb/verb + que.

Verwendung

  • Use parce que for a neutral, direct explanation.
  • Use puisque when the reason is known, clear, or shared by the speakers.
  • Put comme at the start when you want to establish the reason first.
  • Choose à cause de for an unfavorable cause and grâce à for a beneficial cause.
  • Use donc, alors, or c’est pourquoi to introduce a logical result.
  • Use si… que or tellement… que when intensity leads to a consequence.

Beispiele

  • Comme il pleuvait, nous avons pris le bus. — As it was raining, we took the bus.
  • Le train est en retard à cause d’un problème technique. — The train is late because of a technical problem.
  • J’ai terminé plus tôt grâce à ton aide. — I finished earlier thanks to your help.
  • Elle était tellement fatiguée qu’elle s’est couchée à neuf heures. — She was so tired that she went to bed at nine.

Typischer Fehler

❌ Je suis resté chez moi à cause qu’il pleuvait.

✅ Je suis resté chez moi parce qu’il pleuvait.

Do not use à cause de like the English conjunction because. It must be followed by a noun; before a clause, use parce que.

Merke

Use à cause de or grâce à before a noun, but parce que before a full clause. The cause explains why; the consequence states what follows.
