Expressing purpose

B1ImportantFrench

Kurz erklärt

To say why someone does something, French commonly uses pour que followed by the subjunctive when the two parts of the sentence have different subjects. Afin que has the same meaning but is more formal. If the person doing both actions is the same, use pour or afin de followed by an infinitive instead.

Verwendung

  • Use pour que for an everyday purpose involving a different subject.
  • Use afin que in more formal speech or writing.
  • Use pour or afin de plus an infinitive when the subject of both actions is the same.
