The past conditional
Kurz erklärt
The French conditionnel passé describes what would have happened under different circumstances. It is useful for imagined past results, regrets, and missed opportunities. It can also present past information as unconfirmed, especially in news reports.
Bildung
Present conditional of avoir or être + past participle: j’aurais parlé, elle serait partie.
Verwendung
- To describe a hypothetical result in the past
- To express regret or criticism about a past action
- To report past information that has not been confirmed
Beispiele
- Si j’avais eu le temps, je t’aurais appelé. — If I had had time, I would have called you.
- Nous serions venus, mais la voiture est tombée en panne. — We would have come, but the car broke down.
- Tu aurais dû me prévenir. — You should have warned me.
- Le suspect aurait quitté le pays hier. — The suspect reportedly left the country yesterday.
Typischer Fehler
❌ Si j’aurais su, je serais venu.
✅ Si j’avais su, je serais venu.
Unlike English, French does not use the conditional after si in this pattern. Use the pluperfect after si and the past conditional for the result.
Merke
The auxiliary carries the conditional ending; the main verb is a past participle. In a past si-clause, use the pluperfect after si.
