The gérondif and present participle
Kurz erklärt
The French gérondif expresses how, when, or under what condition something happens. It consists of en plus the participe présent and normally refers to the same subject as the main verb. The participe présent without en describes an action connected to a noun or pronoun and is more common in written French.
Bildung
Take the present-tense nous form, remove -ons, and add -ant: nous parlons → parlant. The gérondif is en + participe présent: en parlant. Three irregular forms are ayant, étant, and sachant. Both forms are invariable.
Verwendung
- Use the gérondif for simultaneous actions: en marchant (while walking).
- Use it to express manner or means: en pratiquant (by practicing).
- Use tout en + participe présent to emphasize two simultaneous or contrasting actions.
- Use the participe présent without en to give additional information about a noun or pronoun.

Typischer Fehler
❌ Il améliore son français regardant des films.
✅ Il améliore son français en regardant des films.
When the form explains the means or manner of the main action, French requires the gérondif with en; do not copy the English -ing construction without it.
Merke
Use en for the gérondif, but not for the participe présent. The implied subject of the gérondif should normally be the subject of the main verb.
