Near future with ir + infinitive
In brief
To talk about what you are going to do, use the present tense of ir (to go) followed by the verb in its basic form. In Brazilian Portuguese, this is a natural, everyday way to talk about plans and upcoming events.
Form
ir in the present tense + infinitive: eu vou estudar, você/ele/ela vai estudar, nós vamos estudar, vocês/eles/elas vão estudar.
Usage
- Say what you plan to do: Vou cozinhar hoje. (I’m going to cook today.)
- Talk about something expected soon: Vai chover. (It’s going to rain.)
Examples
- Vou ligar para minha mãe amanhã. — I’m going to call my mom tomorrow.
- Você vai trabalhar hoje? — Are you going to work today?
- Nós vamos assistir a um filme à noite. — We’re going to watch a movie tonight.
- Eles vão chegar cedo. — They’re going to arrive early.
Common mistake
❌ Vou a estudar.
✅ Vou estudar.
Do not add a preposition between ir and the infinitive when expressing the near future.
Remember
The second verb stays in the infinitive; only ir changes with the subject.
