Adjectives, Adverbs & Comparison

Comparatives and Equality

A2EssentialLatin American Spanish

Kurz erklärt

Spanish comparisons show that two people, things, or actions are different or equal. Use más for ‘more’ and menos for ‘less’. For equal qualities or ways of doing something, use tan … como. The word que introduces the second part of an unequal comparison, while como introduces the second part of an equality comparison.

Bildung

más/menos + adjective or adverb + que; tan + adjective or adverb + como. Common irregular forms are mejor (better), peor (worse), mayor (older/greater), and menor (younger/lesser); do not add más to these forms.

Verwendung

  • Use más … que to compare a greater degree of a quality or action.
  • Use menos … que to compare a smaller degree.
  • Use tan … como when the degree is equal.
  • Use mejor or peor for common irregular comparisons with good/well or bad/badly.

Beispiele

  • Este autobús es más rápido que el otro. — This bus is faster than the other one.
  • Ana habla menos rápido que Luis. — Ana speaks less quickly than Luis.
  • Mi apartamento es tan cómodo como el tuyo. — My apartment is as comfortable as yours.
  • Hoy me siento mejor que ayer. — Today I feel better than yesterday.

Typischer Fehler

❌ Hoy me siento más mejor que ayer.

✅ Hoy me siento mejor que ayer.

Mejor already means ‘better’, so it is not used with más.

Merke

Use que after más or menos, but como after tan. Never combine más with mejor or peor.
