Using and omitting articles
Kurz erklärt
French nouns usually need an article more often than English nouns do. Use an article when talking about things in general, with most country names, and for meals in common expressions. However, French omits the article in a few frequent patterns, especially before an unmodified profession after être and before a language directly after parler.
Bildung
general noun: definite article + noun; être + profession; parler + language
Verwendung
- Use the definite article for general likes, dislikes, and categories: J’aime le café.
- Use an article with most country names: la France, le Canada, les États-Unis.
- Do not use an article before an unmodified profession after être: Elle est médecin.
- Do not use an article before a language directly after parler: Nous parlons français.
- Use the article when the language is the subject or object of another verb: Le français est utile.
