Passé composé with être and reflexive verbs
Kurz erklärt
Some French verbs form the passé composé with être instead of avoir. This includes common verbs of movement or change, such as aller, venir, arriver, partir, entrer, sortir, naître, and mourir. All reflexive verbs also use être. The past participle normally agrees with the subject in gender and number.
Bildung
subject + present tense of être + past participle: elle est arrivée, ils sont partis. With a reflexive verb: subject + reflexive pronoun + être + past participle: je me suis levé(e), nous nous sommes couchés.
Verwendung
- Use être with the common movement and change-of-state verbs that require it.
- Use être with every reflexive verb in the passé composé.
- Add -e, -s, or -es to the past participle when required by the subject.
- With reflexive verbs, agreement has exceptions, for example: Elle s’est lavé les mains.
