The pronoun en
Kurz erklärt
The pronoun en replaces a phrase introduced by de, including du, de la, de l’ and des. It often means “some,” “any,” “of it” or “of them.” Unlike English, French normally keeps en when the noun is omitted after a number or quantity.
Bildung
Place en before the conjugated verb: J’en prends. With an infinitive, place it before that infinitive: Je vais en prendre.
Verwendung
- Use en to avoid repeating a thing introduced by de: parler de ce film → en parler.
- Use en for an unspecified amount introduced by a partitive article: boire du café → en boire.
- With a number or quantity, replace the noun with en but keep the quantity: trois pommes → en prendre trois.
Beispiele
- Tu veux du café ? Oui, j’en veux. — Do you want some coffee? Yes, I do.
- Elle parle de son voyage. Elle en parle souvent. — She talks about her trip. She often talks about it.
- Nous avons trois pommes. Nous en mangeons deux. — We have three apples. We eat two of them.
- Je vais acheter du pain. Je vais en acheter. — I’m going to buy some bread. I’m going to buy some.
Typischer Fehler
❌ J’ai trois pommes et je mange deux.
✅ J’ai trois pommes et j’en mange deux.
English can use a number without repeating the noun, but French normally needs en before the verb when the counted noun is omitted.
Merke
En replaces the de phrase, not the number or quantity. Put en directly before the verb it belongs to.
