The pronoun y
Kurz erklärt
The pronoun y usually replaces a place already mentioned. It often means there or to it. It can also replace à followed by a thing or idea, but not normally à followed by a person.
Bildung
Place y before the conjugated verb: J’y vais. In a negative sentence: Je n’y vais pas. With an infinitive, y usually goes directly before the infinitive: Je vais y aller.
Verwendung
- Replace a place introduced by à, dans, chez, sur, or another expression of place.
- Replace à + a thing or idea when the verb requires à, as in penser à quelque chose.
- Use y so you do not repeat information that is already clear.

Typischer Fehler
❌ Je pense à ce problème. Je le pense souvent.
✅ Je pense à ce problème. J’y pense souvent.
English uses it, which can suggest le. French uses y because penser is followed by à.
Merke
Y normally comes before the verb. Think of it as there or à + it.
