Prepositions of Place
In brief
Use Italian place words to say where someone or something is. Sotto means ‘under,’ sopra means ‘on top of’ or ‘above,’ and tra or fra means ‘between.’ Vicino a means ‘near,’ and davanti a means ‘in front of.’ These expressions answer the question Dove? (‘Where?’).
Form
è + place expression + place: è sotto il letto; è vicino a casa. Use a after vicino and davanti when naming a place.
Usage
- Use sotto and sopra to locate something below or above another object.
- Use vicino a and davanti a to describe nearby and front positions.
- Use tra or fra for a position between two places or objects.
Examples
- Il gatto è sotto il letto. — The cat is under the bed.
- Il libro è sopra il tavolo. — The book is on the table.
- La farmacia è vicino a casa. — The pharmacy is near home.
- La scuola è tra il parco e il museo. — The school is between the park and the museum.
Common mistake
❌ La farmacia è vicino di casa.
✅ La farmacia è vicino a casa.
To mean ‘near home,’ use vicino a casa. Vicino di casa is used in a different expression, un vicino di casa (‘a neighbor’).
Remember
Vicino and davanti take a before the place they refer to; sotto, sopra, and tra do not need it.
