Relative Clauses with Che and Cui

B1ImportantItalian

In brief

Relative clauses add information about a person or thing without starting a new sentence. In Italian, che works when that person or thing is the subject or direct object of the added clause. Use a preposition plus cui when the verb or meaning calls for a preposition.

Form

noun + che + clause (subject or direct object); noun + preposition + cui + clause (for example, con cui, di cui, in cui).

Usage

  • Use che for a subject: la persona che abita qui (the person who lives here).
  • Use che for a direct object: il film che guardiamo (the film we are watching).
  • Keep the needed preposition before cui: la persona con cui parlo (the person I speak with).

Examples

  • La ragazza che lavora qui è mia sorella. — The girl who works here is my sister.
  • Il libro che leggo è interessante. — The book I’m reading is interesting.
  • La collega con cui lavoro è simpatica. — The colleague I work with is nice.
  • Questa è la città in cui vivo. — This is the city I live in.

Common mistake

❌ La collega che lavoro è simpatica.

✅ La collega con cui lavoro è simpatica.

Lavorare con qualcuno needs con. In a relative clause, keep that preposition before cui; che cannot replace con cui here.

Remember

Che does not change for gender or number. Put the required preposition directly before cui.
