Trapassato Prossimo

B1ImportantItalian

In brief

Use the trapassato prossimo to look back from a moment in the past: it tells you what had already happened before that moment. The later event is often stated in the same sentence, but it can also be clear from context.

Form

Imperfetto of avere or essere + past participle: avevo mangiato (I had eaten), ero uscito (I had gone out). Choose the auxiliary as you would in the passato prossimo; with essere, the participle agrees with the subject: era uscita, erano usciti.

Usage

  • Show that one past event happened before another: Quando sono arrivato, il negozio aveva già chiuso (When I arrived, the shop had already closed).
  • Describe an earlier experience or situation from a past viewpoint, often with già, mai or ancora.

Examples

  • Quando sono arrivato a casa, i bambini erano già usciti. — When I got home, the children had already gone out.
  • Non avevo mai visto il mare prima di quel viaggio. — I had never seen the sea before that trip.
  • Avevamo finito di cenare quando ha chiamato Giulia. — We had finished dinner when Giulia called.

Common mistake

❌ Quando sono arrivato, Marco è già partito.

✅ Quando sono arrivato, Marco era già partito.

If Marco left before you arrived, use era partito (‘had left’). È partito is the passato prossimo and does not clearly place his departure before your arrival.

Remember

For ‘had done’, think imperfect auxiliary + past participle; check whether the action really precedes a past reference point.
