Simple future tense

B1ImportantBrazilian Portuguese

In brief

The simple future (futuro do presente) expresses what will happen. In Brazilian Portuguese, it often sounds more formal or deliberate than everyday spoken language, but you will encounter it in announcements, writing, promises, and predictions. Unlike English will, the future meaning is carried by an ending on the verb itself.

Form

Add future endings to the full infinitive: estudar → estudarei (I will study), estudará (he/she will study), estudaremos (we will study), estudarão (they will study). The same endings work with -ar, -er, and -ir verbs. A few common verbs change their stem: fazer → farei; dizer → direi; trazer → trarei.

Usage

  • Use it for future events and predictions: A reunião começará às nove. (The meeting will start at nine.)
  • Use it for promises or commitments: Enviarei o documento amanhã. (I will send the document tomorrow.)

Examples

  • Eu ligarei para você amanhã. — I will call you tomorrow.
  • Nós viajaremos em julho. — We will travel in July.
  • Ela fará o jantar hoje à noite. — She will make dinner tonight.

Common mistake

❌ Ela fazerá o jantar hoje à noite.

✅ Ela fará o jantar hoje à noite.

Fazer has an irregular future stem: far-. Use fará, not fazerá.

Remember

Future endings attach to the infinitive, except with a few common irregular stems.
