Nouns, Articles and Quantities

Quantities with muito, pouco, algum and nenhum

A2ImportantBrazilian Portuguese

In brief

Use muito for a large amount or number and pouco for a small one. Algum refers to an unspecified amount or person or thing; nenhum means not any or not a single one. When these words come before a noun, their endings usually match the noun’s gender and number.

Form

muito/muita/muitos/muitas; pouco/pouca/poucos/poucas; algum/alguma/alguns/algumas; nenhum/nenhuma + noun

Usage

  • With plural nouns, muitos and muitas mean many; with singular nouns such as água, muita means a lot of.
  • Use pouco or pouca for a small amount, and poucos or poucas for a small number.
  • Algum or alguma can mean some in a statement or any in a question; use alguns or algumas with plural nouns.
  • Nenhum or nenhuma often appears with não to say that you have none of something: Não tenho nenhum ingresso.

Examples

  • Temos muitos livros em casa. — We have many books at home.
  • Há pouca água na garrafa. — There is little water in the bottle.
  • Você tem alguma dúvida? — Do you have a question?
  • Não tenho nenhum ingresso. — I don’t have a ticket.

Common mistake

❌ Tenho muito livros.

✅ Tenho muitos livros.

Before a noun, muito agrees with it: livros is masculine plural, so use muitos.

Remember

Match the ending to the noun: muitas pessoas, poucos dias, alguma dúvida, nenhum ingresso.
