Verbs, Tenses and Moods

Ser and estar

A1EssentialBrazilian Portuguese

In brief

Portuguese has two common verbs for English ‘to be’. Use ser to say who or what someone is, where they are from, or what something is like as a characteristic. Use estar to say where someone or something is, or how they feel or are right now. Choose according to the meaning, not simply whether something is permanent or temporary.

Form

Present tense: eu sou / estou; você, ele, ela é / está; nós somos / estamos; vocês, eles, elas são / estão.

Usage

  • Use ser for identity and profession: Ela é professora.
  • Use estar for location: Estou em casa.
  • Use estar for a current state: A comida está quente.

Examples

  • Eu sou brasileira. — I am Brazilian.
  • Ela é professora. — She is a teacher.
  • Estou em casa. — I am at home.
  • A comida está quente. — The food is hot.

Common mistake

❌ Sou em casa.

✅ Estou em casa.

Use estar, not ser, to say where someone is.

Remember

Ser tells you what someone or something is; estar often tells you where or how they are.
