Prepositions for times, dates and durations
In brief
In Brazilian Portuguese, the preposition depends on whether you mean a clock time, a date, or an amount of time. For clock times, use às before plural hours and à before uma hora: às oito, à uma. Use em for months and years, but usually no dia for a specific calendar date.
Form
a + as = às (às oito); a + a = à (à uma); em + a = na (na segunda-feira); em + o = no (no dia 5 de maio).
Usage
- Use às for clock times: A reunião começa às oito.
- Use na or no with weekdays, and em with months or years: na segunda-feira, em janeiro, em 2026.
- Use por or durante for how long something lasts; em tells you how long until it happens.
Examples
- A reunião começa às oito. — The meeting starts at eight.
- Nos vemos na segunda-feira. — See you on Monday.
- Estudei por duas horas. — I studied for two hours.
- O ônibus sai em dez minutos. — The bus leaves in ten minutes.
Common mistake
❌ A reunião começa em oito horas.
✅ A reunião começa às oito horas.
For ‘at eight o’clock,’ use às. Em oito horas means ‘in eight hours,’ which gives a different time.
Remember
Use às for ‘at’ a clock time, but em for ‘in’ an amount of time from now.
