Pronoms et déterminants

Other, another, each et every

B1Importantanglais

En bref

Pour parler d’un élément différent ou supplémentaire, on emploie another devant un nom singulier dénombrable et other devant un nom pluriel ou indénombrable. Each et every correspondent souvent à « chaque », mais each considère les éléments un par un, tandis que every envisage l’ensemble d’un groupe.

Formation

another + nom singulier dénombrable ; other + nom pluriel ou indénombrable ; each/every + nom singulier + verbe au singulier.

Emploi

  • Another signifie « un autre » ou « encore un » : another cup, please.
  • Other accompagne un pluriel ou un indénombrable : other people, other information. Avec un groupe précis, on peut dire the other people.

Exemples

  • Could I have another cup of coffee?
  • We have other plans tonight. — Nous avons d’autres projets ce soir.
  • Each student has a key. — Chaque élève a une clé.
  • Every room has a window. — Chaque chambre a une fenêtre.

Erreur fréquente

❌ Every students have a key.

✅ Every student has a key.
