The plus-que-parfait
Kurz erklärt
The plus-que-parfait describes something that had already happened before another event or situation in the past. It helps make the order of past events clear, especially when the earlier event is mentioned after the later one.
Bildung
Use the imparfait of avoir or être followed by the participe passé: j’avais parlé, elle était partie. Choose the same auxiliary as in the passé composé; agreement rules also remain the same.
Verwendung
- To describe an action completed before another past action.
- To explain the earlier cause or background of a past situation.
- Often with déjà, jamais, or pas encore to show what had or had not happened by then.
Beispiele
- Quand je suis arrivé, le film avait déjà commencé. — When I arrived, the movie had already started.
- Elle était fatiguée parce qu’elle avait mal dormi. — She was tired because she had slept badly.
- Nous n’étions jamais allés à Lyon avant ce voyage. — We had never been to Lyon before that trip.
Typischer Fehler
❌ J’avais allé au magasin avant le dîner.
✅ J’étais allé au magasin avant le dîner.
English always uses “had,” but French motion verbs such as aller take être here, just as they do in the passé composé.
Merke
Think of the plus-que-parfait as the past before the past. Form it with an imparfait auxiliary plus a participe passé.
