Prepositions

Prepositions of time

A2ImportantFrench

Kurz erklärt

French uses different prepositions to place an event in time or describe its duration. Use à with clock times, en with months and years, and au with printemps. For actions continuing into the present, use depuis. Pendant gives the length of a complete or limited action, while pour often gives a planned length of time.

Bildung

à + clock time; en + month/year or été, automne, hiver; au printemps; depuis/pendant/pour + time expression

Verwendung

  • Use à for a precise clock time: à huit heures.
  • Use en for months and years: en mai, en 2026.
  • Use en with été, automne, and hiver, but au with printemps.
  • Use depuis for an action that started in the past and is still continuing.
  • Use pendant for the full duration of an action, and pour for an intended duration.

Beispiele

  • Le cours commence à neuf heures. — The class starts at nine o’clock.
  • Nous partons en juillet. — We are leaving in July.
  • J’habite ici depuis deux ans. — I have lived here for two years.
  • J’ai réservé une chambre pour trois nuits. — I booked a room for three nights.

Typischer Fehler

❌ J’habite ici pour deux ans.

✅ J’habite ici depuis deux ans.

English uses “for” for an action continuing into the present, but French uses depuis with the present tense.

Merke

Use depuis when the action is still true now. Seasons take en, except au printemps.
