Negating verbs with não
In brief
To say that something does not happen or is not true, put não before the verb. It works with everyday verbs as well as ser (to be) and estar (to be). Unlike English, Portuguese does not add a separate helping verb like do or does to make a negative statement.
Form
Subject + não + conjugated verb + rest of sentence. If the subject is left out, start with não: Não gosto de café.
Usage
- Use não immediately before the verb you want to negate: Eu não trabalho hoje.
- The verb still changes to match the subject: Ela não trabalha hoje.
- A subject pronoun can be omitted when the verb makes the meaning clear: Não tenho tempo.
Examples
- Eu não trabalho hoje. — I don’t work today.
- Ela não está em casa. — She isn’t at home.
- Nós não temos tempo. — We don’t have time.
- Não gosto de café. — I don’t like coffee.
Common mistake
❌ Eu sou não brasileiro.
✅ Eu não sou brasileiro.
English puts not after am, but Portuguese puts não before sou.
Remember
Place não before the verb, even when English puts not after a form of be.
