Question words and question formation
In brief
To ask for specific information in Brazilian Portuguese, start with a question word such as quem (who), onde (where), quando (when), como (how), or por que (why). The rest of the sentence usually keeps the familiar subject–verb order: Onde você mora? Unlike English, you do not add a word like do to form the question.
Form
Question word + subject + verb + rest of the sentence + ? Example: Quando você chega?
Usage
- Use o que for ‘what’ and quem for ‘who’: O que você quer? Quem é ela?
- Use qual to ask ‘which’ or to request a specific choice or detail: Qual é o seu nome?
- Write por que as two words when asking ‘why’.
Examples
- Onde você mora? — Where do you live?
- Quando você chega? — When are you arriving?
- Qual é o seu nome? — What is your name?
- Por que você está aqui? — Why are you here?
Common mistake
❌ Onde você faz morar?
✅ Onde você mora?
English uses do in ‘Where do you live?’, but Portuguese asks this question without an extra helper verb.
Remember
In a question, por que means ‘why’ and is written as two words.
