Verbs, Tenses and Moods

Earlier past with tinha + past participle

B1ImportantBrazilian Portuguese

In brief

Use tinha + past participle to show that something had already happened before another moment in the past. This is the everyday Brazilian Portuguese way to express an earlier past, like English ‘had left’ or ‘had finished.’ The later event is often stated in the same sentence, but it can also be clear from context.

Form

Imperfect of ter (tinha, tínhamos, tinham) + past participle: tinha chegado (had arrived), tinham feito (had done). The participle does not change to agree with the subject.

Usage

  • Place a completed action before a later past event: Quando liguei, ela já tinha saído (When I called, she had already left).
  • Use já (already) or ainda não (not yet) when they help make the sequence clear.

Examples

  • Quando cheguei, ela já tinha saído. — When I arrived, she had already left.
  • Eu tinha terminado o relatório antes da reunião. — I had finished the report before the meeting.
  • Quando os ingressos se esgotaram, a gente ainda não tinha comprado os nossos. — When the tickets sold out, we still hadn’t bought ours.

Common mistake

❌ Quando cheguei, ela já tinha sair.

✅ Quando cheguei, ela já tinha saído.

After tinha, use the past participle (saído), not the infinitive (sair).

Remember

For an action completed before another past event, think ‘had done’ → tinha feito.
