Present subjunctive: forms and common triggers
In brief
In Brazilian Portuguese, use the present subjunctive (presente do subjuntivo) after expressions such as quero que, espero que, and é importante que when talking about a wished-for or necessary action. The verb after que takes a special form: Espero que você venha means ‘I hope you come.’

For most verbs, take the present-tense eu form, remove -o, and add -e, -emos, -em for -ar verbs (falo → fale, falemos, falem) or -a, -amos, -am for -er/-ir verbs (bebo → beba, bebamos, bebam; abro → abra, abramos, abram). Some common verbs are irregular: ser → seja, estar → esteja, ter → tenha.
