Construction de la phrase

There is et there are

A1Essentielanglais

En bref

Pour dire qu’une chose ou une personne se trouve quelque part, l’anglais utilise there is ou there are. En français, cela correspond souvent à « il y a ». Choisis la forme selon ce qui suit : singulier ou pluriel.

Formation

There is + nom singulier ; there are + nom pluriel. À la forme négative : there isn’t / there aren’t. Pour poser une question : Is there…? / Are there…?

Emploi

  • There is présente une seule chose ou une quantité indénombrable : There is a shop. / There is water.
  • There are présente plusieurs choses : There are two shops.
  • Dans une question, is ou are se place avant there : Is there a bathroom?

Exemples

  • There is a café near my house. — Il y a un café près de chez moi.
  • There are two chairs in the kitchen. — Il y a deux chaises dans la cuisine.
  • There isn’t any milk in the fridge. — Il n’y a pas de lait dans le réfrigérateur.
  • Are there any buses today? — Est-ce qu’il y a des bus aujourd’hui ?

Erreur fréquente

❌ There is two chairs in the kitchen.

✅ There are two chairs in the kitchen.

Même si « il y a » ne change pas en français, en anglais on emploie there are devant un nom pluriel.

À retenir

Regarde le nom après there : un seul élément ou une quantité indénombrable → is ; plusieurs éléments → are.
